Safe sandbox play is important. Equally important, young children benefit from knowing that some expectations are non-negotiable.

Planning for success: The first day of sand play, a child chooses a pair on comfortable safety glasses with unique colored earpieces that belong to that child. We write the name of the child in permanent maker on earpiece. The glasses are kept in a child-accessible bin next to the sandbox and glasses must be either in the bin or worn. No child may play in the sandbox without glasses on, and for a child who refuses there are many other fun activities available that do not require wearing the glasses.

This lesson has carried over into many activities, outside, in the school and out in the community.
